Saint Patrick’s Day
As we have two Irish teachers in our school and some wonderful musicians, too, we asked them to play some traditional Irish songs and tell us about their traditions, for example, Saint Patrick´s Day.
Saint Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick (AD 385–461), the foremost patron saint of Ireland, because he was a bishop who helped Irish people to become christian.
Saint Patrick’s Day was made an official Christian feast day in the early 17th century. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, and celebrates the heritage and culture of the Irish in general. Celebrations generally involve public parades, festivals and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.
Nuestro colegio ha apostado fuertemente por el bilingüismo y tiene varios profesores nativos. Aprovechando que dos de ellos, Lynn y Ciaran, han nacido en Irlanda y que también contamos con Belén Cembranos, nuestra profesora de música en varias secciones bilingües y que además toca en un grupo de música celta, ya podíamos celebrar por todo lo alto el día de San Patricio. Teníamos hasta una enorme bandera irlandesa que nos preparó David.
En el rato del recreo nos juntamos en la biblioteca un montón de alumnos y profesores para escuchar las explicaciones en inglés de Ciaran y de Lynn. A continuación, los músicos (Almudena, Sergio, Belén y Ciaran) nos deleitaron con varios temas tradicionales y nos animaron a seguirles con las palmas en las piezas más animadas. Después interpretaron un fragmento de la banda sonora de “El último mohicano”, que nos hizo sosegarnos. Les dimos un aplauso tremendo y después lo celebramos tomando té y pastas. Estuvo genial.
