Mme CURIE by Silvia Romero
As This is the English term in the library’s Platform , I’ve been asked for a short summary of the biography of one of the most known scientists in the world, Madame Curie.
While she lived he had a difficult situation because of her religion and because her land was owned by Russians so she fought for freedom and science.
She was born in 1867 as Maria Sklodowska in the capital of Poland (Warsow). Her father was an important teacher. Maria was the youngest of 5 children, but Zofia died when Maria was 7. Her mother died 3 years later. She won the gold medal when she graduated at the Russian Academy in Warsaw. In 1886 she started to work as a nursemaid in
the Zoravski family, to hold Bronia’s studies in Paris and in 1891 she finally went there to study. In 1893 she was the best pupil in «La Sorbona» and she worked in Lippmann’s lab. A year later she met Pierre Curie and she fell in love so they married in 1895. In 1897 Irene was born, Maria’s first daughter. And between 1899 and 1903 she worked in her own lab with her husband isolating radium from a rock called pechblenda. At the end of this period she had a thesis and while she and Pierre presented it, they won the chemistry Nobel prize for it and their discovery. In 1905 Eva was born and a year later Pierre died in a traffic accident. Although she was extremely sad she continue with the task that she and her husband had begun and she won the Physics Nobel prize in 1911 and after her, her daugther Irene continued with it and she also won a deserved Nobel. In 1934 Maria died of cancer because of her constant radiation.
